Reflecting on a Successful Hunting Season in Pennsylvania

With the frigid temperatures that keep lingering this winter we have been able to reflect on this past year’s hunting season. This was our first year hunting with all eight pointers over multiple hunting trips and also being able to hunt on Sunday in Pennsylvania. The first two major trips were in Michigan in September and October. After those trips our focus was on woodcock, grouse and pheasant in Pennsylvania.

The challenge we ran into this year was the quantity of hunters out on public lands with Sunday hunting now being permitted in Pennsylvania. With so many hunters and other dogs out we had to rein in the dogs more than we typically do which presented a challenge in areas with more open cover but even with that the season in our home state was a success.

Some of our top moments included Cece’s first pheasant and shooting a double over Wayne. Cece’s first pheasant involved recovering the rooster in a retaining pond (note to self start bringing a packable fishing rod since this is the second pheasant that we have had to fish out of a retaining pond). While Wayne’s double involved a hawk stealing the second pheasant. Even though the second pheasant wasn’t recovered going in for the flush and having three roosters flush simultaneously as Wayne was rock solid is something I’ll never forget.

Over the course of multiple hunting excursions after work and on the weekends the Wildland crew pointed a total of 49 pheasant, 5 grouse, and 15 woodcock. Wayne topped the list with 27 pheasant, 8 woodcock, and 3 grouse pointed!

Now to enjoy our dogs and continue to rest before spring training is in full swing.

PA Amateur Fall Trial

PA AM Shooting Dog

It was a great weekend in Marienville, PA for the fall running of the PA Amateur field trial. Cece was awarded 2nd place after finishing her run with three finds one being on a running covey. Eric handled her littermate Coach, who was awarded third, and finished with three finds during his run. It’s great being able to watch this litter of puppies from Lola grow up and seeing them all now have field trial placements!

Highlights from Our 2025 Michigan Hunting Trips

Caroline Grouse

That’s a wrap on our 2025 trips to MI. We went out for a quick weekend trip in September and were treated to hot and dry weather and bluebird skies. The conditions weren’t easy to say the least but all the dogs managed to have multiple bird contacts.

It was a long week for our October trip with hot and dry conditions to kick off the trip and similar to last year we hunted 7 days straight. Even with the warmer temperatures we managed to move woodcock and grouse everyday with a total of 62 birds by the end of the trip and 49 flushed over point. We capped off the trip with all dogs having birds shot for them including all the baby beans having their first wild birds shot for them!

2024/2025 Season Recap

What a 24/25 season for the Wildland Pointers! 22 placements across 2 states including Wayne getting two Runner Up Championship titles, Chuck winning multiple shooting dog stakes and being named day dog in the US Complete Open Invitational, Caroline and Lola winning multiple times. On top of that Cece, Georgia, Nick, and Winston placed in multiple derby stakes and were able to get amateur and open qualified. Now it’s time to enjoy the summer and start wrapping our heads around having 8 shooting dogs!

Region 4 Amateur Championship

Wayne strikes again being named Runner Up Champion in the Region 4 Amateur Championship held just before Mother’s Day at the Oakridge Pointing Dog Club. Wayne ran in the 7th brace of the championship in the heat of the day. He finished as strong as he started scoring 4 finds with the first being on a covey. He’s certainly been hitting his stride at the right time as this was the last championship until Fall. Thank you to the judges and to everyone who worked behind the scenes to run this event!

A companion amateur derby stake also ran in conjunction with the championship. Conditions were pretty tough for the derbies running in hot conditions with little wind. Nick ran in the second brace and was awarded third at the end of the running. He had a forward searching race and scored three finds during his run.
